Day 407

Memory - Day one of “A Land That Never Forgets” —Not Again—

Description: Kino and Hermes travel along a muddy road with various puddles, both notably muddied on one side. They chatter idly, wondering how many countries Kino has visited, and Kino observing that they can't possibly remember everything but cherishing the memories that remain. However, they also note that the ability to forget is also useful, particularly when it comes to bad memories. Although... sometimes, it's important to remember the bad things as well...

They arrive in the country which is holding various festivities as it's the anniversary of a terrible flood that took many lives seven years ago. At first, Kino spends a little time observing the stream near the country, apparently lost in thought, but is soon attracted to the call of free food per the festivities taking place exactly the three days of their stay. There's a song and speeches commemorating the flooding, after which people line up for food much like how they did when rations were passed out. Afterwards, Kino tries to buy supplies, but all that they can find for sale are shirts with cute embroidery featuring submerged houses and catchphrases about surviving the flood. Likewise, all knives and sharpening stones for sale are commemorative, and expensive. They don't end up buying any supplies at all save for at the ammunition shop, the only place to have normal stock.

They then prepare for bed, and Hermes asks why they've been so lost in thought. Kino responds that they feel like they've forgotten something, but they aren't sure what it could be.

Note: the original Japanese does not particularly gender Kino, and by default most people tend to assume Kino is male upon sight, so assume cases of "Miss" etc. are just some polite referral to Kino (one official translation uses Mx.) unless otherwise noted.
