Day 382
Date: 2021-07-13 03:35 am (UTC)Description: Kino and their talking motorcycle, Hermes, make their way through a mountainous road. Kino mentions that the country they're heading to has a reputation for being absolutely horrible to travelers, harassing and overcharging them, and so on. Kino however is still interested in seeing if it really lives up to its reputation and remarks that if it's that bad, they can complain about it afterwards. Upon arriving at a beautiful looking country at the foot of a mountain, the guards are initially brusque, but cheerful and friendly when Kino states they plan to stay for three days. Wondering if they took the wrong road by mistake, Kino and Hermes enter and are greeted warmly by a crowd of happy and friendly residents.
Kino, still confused, asks for a hotel with a shower and space for Hermes that doesn't charge much. The people begin squabbling over which place would suit Kino best when a young girl about eleven or twelve gets Kino's attention stating her place is like that. Her name is Sakura, and when Kino agrees, she leads them to her parents' hotel. Sakura comments that Kino's name is short and sounds nice and is easy to pronounce, which Kino responds they thought the same long ago, to Sakura's confusion. Kino comments that Sakura is a nice name as well, but Sakura is embarrassed; it's the name of a flower, but it's easily changed into an insult, and the other kids always tease her about it. Kino falls silent at that, looking thoughtful.
They arrive at the hotel and Sakura takes the lead in giving Kino a room on the ground floor with plenty of space out of consideration for Hermes. They then go to the hotel's dining room and enjoy a delicious lunch, completely contrary to the rumors.
Note: the original Japanese does not particularly gender Kino, and by default most people tend to assume Kino is male upon sight, so assume cases of "Miss" etc. are just some polite referral to Kino (one official translation uses Mx.) unless otherwise noted.
