Day 321
Date: 2021-01-13 04:41 pm (UTC)Description: The names "Kino" and "Hermes" are blanked out with static.
Kino wakes up in a hotel and checks out the country they're in, practicing with their two persuaders (or gun) Canon and Woodsman in a public shooting range, to the awe of the onlookers - and their talking motorcycle, which is treated as completely normal by both Kino and everyone else around to hear their conversations. They're so good at it in fact, that they are given a sniper rifle to try out - and are immediately able to use it fully in the practice range. They are given the sniper rifle as a gift, as it can be easily dissembled for more convenient traveling.
Note: the original Japanese does not particularly gender Kino, and by default most people tend to assume Kino is male upon sight, so assume cases of "Miss" etc. are just some polite referral to Kino (one official translation uses Mx.)
Notes;
Date: 2021-01-13 08:32 pm (UTC)-They fully remember how to shoot persuaders (in this case, a revolver, pistol, and sniper rifle). Kino is also an incredibly quick draw based on their morning practice.
-They were definitely dodgy about answering who taught them all this and would have absolutely refused to say if it came to that.
Day 321
Date: 2021-01-13 08:36 pm (UTC)Description: The names "Kino" and "Hermes" are blanked out with static.
Kino and their motorrad buddy arrive at a beautiful country where everyone seems to be especially depressed because, as they explain, the world is ending the day after the next. They don't know how, but they do say it's because of a prophecy. Kino seems unconvinced, but does manage to get a free hotel room and falls asleep immediately after a long day of traveling.
Note: the original Japanese does not particularly gender Kino, and by default most people tend to assume Kino is male upon sight, so assume cases of "Miss" etc. are just some polite referral to Kino (one official translation uses Mx.)
Notes;
Date: 2021-01-13 08:37 pm (UTC)-No really there's no takeaway except confusion.
323
Date: 2021-01-21 01:56 am (UTC)Description: The names "Kino" and "Hermes" are blanked out with static.
Sky and their motorrad are traveling along the road and eventually approach a country in the center of a valley. Given the surroundings are beautiful, Sky is excited to see what the country turns out to be like. Upon entry, they are required to have their blood drawn for inspection, which they reluctantly agree to - but not because they're scared of needles or anything, okay? It takes until evening, but they're eventually permitted to enter into the country, and find that a large car has been brought to take them to the hotel as it's already late. They accept the ride, but all the while Sky is visibly confused because they have now realized that everyone in this country has the same face; the women all seem to be the same person at different ages, and the same goes for the men. They arrive at their hotel and find they can stay free of charge as they're guests from the outside, and Sky and the motorrad ponder as to why everyone's face is the same, never actually reaching an answer before Sky simply goes to sleep for the evening.

Date: 2021-02-09 01:16 am (UTC)Description: The names "Kino" and "Hermes" are blanked out with static.
Sky and their motorrad are camping in a forest and settling down for the night, with Sky extinguishing the fire and curling up at the foot of a tree for sleep. They talk quietly about traveling; the motorrad explains that motorrads love to run, so being on a journey, which involves running every day, is a lot of fun. However, what reason do humans have for traveling? Sky thinks about it and concludes that most people probably want to experience new tastes and sights and people.
The motorrad then asks why Sky travels, because their persuader skills are such that they could easily have gotten a job in any country, or even with Master. Not only that, but their travels have caused them to be in quite a bit of danger and endure cruel things. Sky responds that maybe they're foolish mess of a human being. However, they find the world and other people's ways of lives to be so beautiful and fantastic, they're all dear to Sky. They want to know more and more about them, so that's why they travel. Even if they have to face sadness and suffering, they don't want to stop. They enjoy doing it so much that even if they have to hurt or kill others, they'd continue traveling. Besides that, they can stop anytime, so they want to keep going.
The motorrad doesn't really get it, and Sky replies that's fine. Maybe Sky doesn't even really get it either. Maybe they're actually just lost and traveling in order to understand it better.
Both then go to sleep.

Date: 2021-02-09 01:31 am (UTC)Description: The names "Kino" and "Hermes" are blanked out with static.
Sky and the motorrad talk to a young man dressed in a business suit and tie. He explains that because their country has machines that do everything so humans don't have to work anymore, the currency they now use is "stress," which can be accumulated by going to work. Stress is important to accumulate so that they can afford nicer things than the government granted food, clothing, and shelter. Despite the toll it takes on people and general unpleasantness, the man thinks it's a wonderful idea because it means the people endure hardships to know happiness, and it gives them a reason to be productive. He then suggests that Sky immigrate as they could surely get a good job and work their way up.
Sky thanks him for the explanation and then asks about the fees for everything as a traveler, since they need to get more supplies to continue traveling. The man then explains that travelers staying as guests for only a few days don't have to pay.
They move to a bench and Sky enjoys some tea. When the motorrad asks what they'll do next, Sky explains excitedly that if everything's free, they can use the rest of that day and the next to stock up on supplies and other items that can be sold at a high value in other countries. Sky insists that humans should relax whenever they can as they stand and prepare to start shopping, and the motorrad mutters "like teacher, like student."

328 - cw: animal death, hunting
Date: 2021-02-09 01:44 am (UTC)Description: The names "Kino" and "Hermes" are blanked out with static.
Sky hunts a rabbit in a snowy mountain, shooting it in the head and bringing it back to the motorrad so they can "hurry back" because if "those guys" die, Sky will be in a bind. When the motorrad asks what they mean, they reply that they'd lose face. To whom? The rabbit.
They return to a truck covered in so much snow, it's clearly been stuck there for a while. Three men of varying ages who are clearly suffering from malnutrition are eager at the sight of the rabbit, enough to want to eat it raw, but Sky insists on cooking it so they don't make themselves sick. One of the men thanks Sky, and Sky responds that it's too early to thank them, but that the men are welcome.

Re: 328 - cw: animal death, hunting
Date: 2021-02-09 01:45 am (UTC)-Motorrad, snow version!
-The reason they were helping the men was because the idea of being stuck in the snow without food is horrific and they kind of hoped if they were in the same position, someone would help them too.
Day 336
Date: 2021-03-04 08:42 pm (UTC)Description: The names "Kino" and "Hermes" are blanked out with static.
Sky is in a forest with a sniper rifle, which they use to fire at three bandits hiding among the trees nonlethally. Once the bandits are dealt with, a truck passes by unharmed, and Sky returns to a hidden Hermes to catch up to them. However, just as Sky is explaining to Hermes that if they were a bandit in this scenario, they would create a blockade to stop victims, the group comes across a felled tree blocking the road. Before Sky can tell them that all they need to do is move the tree, the truck veers off the road into a side path on the forest, and Sky complains that they've clearly fallen into a trap before following even as the motorrad expresses sympathy for having to handle inexperienced people. They arrive at the ruins of a fortress that was clearly well made in the past, and there Sky confronts the leader of the group, a doctor who has been staying close to a woman carrying a baby the whole time. He explains that he ordered the men to drive off the road because the baby has a weak heart and only a short time to live, and would not have been able to survive the shock if they drove into the tree. Sky states they would have liked to know that earlier before walking away to figure out how to secure the parameter.

Notes;
Date: 2021-03-05 01:34 am (UTC)-They do care about the baby making it through alright at the very least, because the baby is cute.
Day 336
Date: 2021-03-04 08:50 pm (UTC)Description: The names "Kino" and "Hermes" are blanked out with static.
Sky exits a large dome that apparently houses an entire country, stating that they would like to start procedures to leave. The immigration officer responds cheerfully that since they didn't go through entry procedures, there are no exit procedures either. They have a brief discussion of staticked out words that were apparently brought up inside. Sky had only just entered and then decided to leave pretty much immediately, and although the country's dome protection is impressive, the officer laments that hygiene is so incredibly poor, the people there don't live very long and often die young due to diseases. They grew up inside the dome and know nothing else, so they think their country is the greatest place to be, not realizing that they live in such filth. There's a brief discussion in which it's found that Sky has never seen a cockroach before and mentions that it would be interesting to see at least once, while the officer assures them that it's best if they never do. The officer then gives Sky instructions to get to the next guard post around the country where they can find lodgings and supplies with his relatives, and finally asks Sky if they know what a true blue sky is, as that is a question his grandfather riddled him with once. Sky responds that there's no such thing, because the color changes due to all sorts of factors, and no matter what blue it was, it was always beautiful. The officer thanks them before they leave.

Day 336
Date: 2021-03-04 08:56 pm (UTC)Description: The names "Kino" and "Hermes" are blanked out with static.
A man in a business suit meets with Sky to explain something that happened the day before that might be considered surprising. The man then goes on to explain that love is prohibited by law. The country has come to the conclusion that the only purpose of love is to keep a couple together long enough to procreate, and otherwise it causes too many irrational decisions. Thus, the government pairs couples who are willing to have a child based on questionnaires for preference, etc. and allows them to feel love for four years in order to reproduce before returning to taking medicine that negates the chemical reactions causing feelings of love in the brain. The medicine is administered as young as ten years old, and the girl from the day before likely only overcame the medicine because the strength of her feelings from her very first "crush" - on Sky. Hermes notes this means the girl probably "mistook [Sky] for a man."
Sky asks if it's alright to tell other countries of what this one is doing, and the man responds that they would prefer that - and gives Sky a small box containing three bottles filled with capsules as well as a booklet explaining how to make the medicine. He wants other countries to be able to use the same medical advancements they have discovered by eliminating love if they so desire, but notes that Sky can do whatever they wish with the box, whether that's to give it away, sell it, or even throw it out.
As Sky prepares to leave the country with the medicine, the young girl (presumably from the day before) approaches with her parents and three men in business suits there to observe. The girl apologizes for the day before and clarifies with a blank face that she doesn't feel anything like that anymore, so there is nothing to worry about. Sky thanks her and tells her it doesn't bother them before leaving. The motorrad asks what they plan to do with the medicine, but the memory cuts off before Sky answers.

Day 336
Date: 2021-03-05 01:33 am (UTC)Description: The names "Kino" and "Hermes" are blanked out with static.
Sky and Hermes, traveling on a snowy mountain and outfitted for such, come across a stranded truck and tent. Some men emerge from the tent and weakly explain that they've been trapped on the mountain since the start of winter. They beg Sky for food, but Sky responds that they only have enough rations for three people including themself. However, they can hunt for food for the men. Agreeing to stick around for a few days to get the men food to regain their strength so they can free the truck and be on their ways, Sky introduces themself and the motorrad - although the names are covered by static. One of the men gives Sky a small box containing a silver ring with green gemstones in thanks and Sky states it's too early to thank them, but agrees to hold onto it and take it with them if they do manage to save the men. Sky then goes out to hunt.

Re: Day 336
Date: 2021-03-05 01:49 am (UTC)-The ring is actually very pretty and they like it.
Day 400
Date: 2021-03-16 07:26 pm (UTC)Description: The names "Kino" and "Hermes" are blanked out with static.
Sky and their motorrad spend some time modeling some fashion before they are permitted to change back to their usual clothes/appearance and eat at a giant, exquisite banquet. Sky is clearly appreciative and mentions idly that it's lucky there's a country willing to treat travelers who agree to model for them so highly. Based on the ensuing conversation with Hermes, it seems they have a lot of fashion designers and are constantly creating so many new clothes, they bring in any traveler who is willing to model and treat them to good food afterwards, along with archiving all photographs of the fashions and their models in the museum forevermore. They debate checking out the museum, but the memory ends before they do.

Day 400
Date: 2021-03-16 07:33 pm (UTC)Description: The names "Kino" and "Hermes" are blanked out with static.
Sky and the motorrad travel along a road beside a prairie and a lake. They come across a man with a horse who tries to get Sky to carry some of his supplies for him since they're both headed to the same country, but Sky declines and mentions that if they agreed, the man would have no way of preventing them from running ahead with his stuff and selling it once they got there. They then go on to discuss the country itself, with Sky saying they'd heard it was a "gentlemanly country" and the man declaring that it's a "Land of Permitted Murder" where you can't steal, but you can murder anyone without breaking the law. His own country was full of laws, so he decided to immigrate to a place more suited to him, especially since it seems a legendary serial killer has likely made his home in that country. He seems to expect it to be a jungle inside the country's walls.
Sky once again declines a request to carry his stuff for him and goes ahead to the country. The immigration officer remarks that they are agreeing to visit a country where murder is not illegal no matter if you are a citizen or traveler, and Sky agrees to those terms. They go inside.

Notes;
Date: 2021-03-16 07:34 pm (UTC)-They're genuinely curious about what this country is going to be like, and are absolutely prepared to throw hands if they have to.
Day 400
Date: 2021-03-16 10:16 pm (UTC)Description: The names "Kino" and "Hermes" are blanked out with static.
It's the same snowy setting as the previous memories. Sky wakes up early in a tent and practices quick drawing Canon, their revolver, as well as a few quick aerobics before setting out and hunting down two large rabbits. They skin the rabbits and hang the resulting furs, and prepare the meat at two different times, once in the afternoon and once in the evening, letting the men have all the meat and eating only clay-like rations themself. The men share stories of their country and invite Sky to visit, promising plenty of food if they ever do. In the evening, the motorrad asks if it's really okay for Sky to spend so much time in the mountains, to which Sky replies that it isn't and they want to leave as soon as possible. However they're being rewarded with a ring for their efforts. They attempt to model the ring on their hand, but the motorrad remarks that it doesn't suit Sky, and Sky agrees that it would get in the way while driving anyway. However, the ring is surely valuable and can be sold in another country. Besides, Sky notes that it isn't so bad to show some kindness to others every so often. The motorrad doesn't seem convinced, but they both lapse into silence and then sleep.

Notes;
Date: 2021-03-16 10:38 pm (UTC)-Still just kinda lowkey helping these guys because maybe someday they'll be helped in turn.
Day 344
Date: 2021-03-26 05:20 pm (UTC)Description: The names "Kino" and "Hermes" are blanked out with static.
A slightly younger Sky rides with their motorrad to a country with a wall, explaining along the way that they're going to start attending school because Master said there's a place in this country that teaches skills no other school does. Sky insists that if there's anything they can learn to become stronger, they'll do it. Not only that, but it serves as good driving practice as well.
They are met at the gate by guards, and Sky puts on a polite smile greeting them while handing over a letter. The older of the two guards reads it before agreeing to let them in, but they'll have to leave their weapons at the gate as the country has a strong policy regarding them. Sky reluctantly but expertly dismantles their two firearms to be stored in boxes at the gate, and with one last warning from the guards that they've marked out areas to avoid due to terrorist activity, they set off again... for exactly the space marked as dangerous.
There, they find a small town and enter a dilapidated school with a pretty, young teacher of about twenty and twelve other students. The teacher introduces Sky as someone who wasn't born or raised here, but instead lives with an old granny in the forest outside of the walls. She then goes on to say the students should treat that as confidential information, and that they should all get along, for they are all comrades. Sky takes a seat among them as class begins.

Notes;
Date: 2021-03-26 07:35 pm (UTC)-They lived in a forest with her. Were they related? What about Sky's parents?
Day 344
Date: 2021-03-26 05:27 pm (UTC)Description: The names "Kino" and "Hermes" are blanked out with static.
Sky is in a coliseum match. The seats are all filled with people cheering for murder, and the arena is littered with large trash, such as wrecked cars. They take a moment when they first walk in to make note of the king sitting in a glass box, the royal seat for spectating. He has a simple yet regal crown atop his head which does not match his gaudy clothes at all, much less the colorful attire of the harem that surrounds him.
Their first opponent is a large man with an iron ball the size of a child on a chain, who scoffs at Sky being his first opponent. Sky asks him to surrender, and he refuses. As the match is signaled to start, he swings the iron ball towards Sky, only for it to simply fly into the air off track and land on one of the cars. Baffled, he looks to the chain, which is broken, and then to Sky, who has a still smoking gun out. He asks if Sky shot it, to which Sky replies they did. He asks if the ball went flying, to which Sky responds it did, and asks him again to surrender. This time, he takes Sky up on it.
The second match occurs at twilight against a thin man wrapped in black clothes. He has metal boomerangs all over his body both as armor and weapons. Sky asks him to surrender, and he refuses. He tells Sky to surrender, but then sneers that even if Sky did, he wouldn't accept it until they were dead. The match begins and he throws all the boomerangs, which Sky runs to the side to dodge. The first few return and he quickly snaps them back into place over his abdomen, and Sky uses the opportunity to drop down to the ground and fire right at the metal blades on his stomach. This causes him to be stunned from the impact, and as the metal boomerangs begin flying back to him over Sky's head, Sky shoots him in the thigh to force him to drop to the ground. This allows the metal blades flying back to go harmlessly over him instead.
Sky wins the match.

Notes;
Date: 2021-03-26 07:34 pm (UTC)-They're angry with the death matches just in general, actually.
-They had decided to win every single match without killing their opponent.
Day 344 cw: mild reference to suicide
Date: 2021-03-26 05:31 pm (UTC)Description: The names "Kino" and "Hermes" are blanked out with static.
Sky attempts to check a well for water in the middle of a desert, only to find that it's completely dried up. Cursing the well for having no water, Sky spends some time yelling before stopping because that just makes them thirstier. The motorrad tells them that they should just go home and return to Master, but Sky refuses, shouting "no!" every time the motorrad brings it up. The motorrad says this is karma showing that the god who protects travelers doesn't think they're up to snuff, and if Sky is so insistent on dying to thirst, couldn't they at least take him someplace where he could be found? Sky retorts that they can't fulfill that wish and gets out some rope and cloth to build a shelter from exposure while the motorrad cracks a joke asking if they're planning to hang themself.
Once under the shelter, the motorrad continues to berate them and insists that in order to be a good traveler, they need to be decisive. However, Sky suddenly smiles an says that what a traveler needs most is a little luck - just as rain begins to fall on the waterproof canvas.
They walk out into a complete downpour, laughing maniacally and catching water in their mouth, dancing around in glee. After a while of this, they turn to the motorrad and ask what he thinks, and he responds that he doesn't think there's anything great about it and he's having mixed feelings about the whole thing.
As Sky continues to twirl around happily in the rain, the motorrad asks what they plan to do next. Sky replies: "I don’t know. What to do? Why bother worrying?"

Notes;
Date: 2021-03-26 07:32 pm (UTC)-They know without a doubt that Master will be extremely angry with them for sneaking away. But this isn't the only reason they left.
Day 344
Date: 2021-03-26 05:40 pm (UTC)Description: The names "Kino" and "Hermes" are blanked out with static.
Sky and Hermes begin touring the country they've come to, and find that most of the residents seem especially despondent. A young man attempts to attack them, but before he can swing his pipe, Sky kicks him in the legs and knocks him over. He rages about killing Sky as he breaks down into sobs and the other citizens come over to comfort him and plead with Sky to have mercy, because they will deal with him. He is upset because he is still so young and the end of the world is coming, and he feels there is so much he hasn't had the chance to do.
Sky begins to talk with the people about the prophecy. It seems a scholar found a book full of strange writings from another country, but upon further examination realized it predicted various events in this country. As the people list examples, it becomes clear that these "predictions" all came after the event themselves, and Sky kicks the motorrad before it can say that in that case the scholar could simply interpret the text however he needed to. Instead, Sky asks about the prophecy that the world would end tomorrow, and it's because the last text in the book talks of "smashing the green plate" which refers to the green plates gifted to others at birth. If the green plate is smashed, then there would be no more births, therefore - the end of the world.
The man asks what Sky plans to do, and Sky thinks about it briefly before replying with: shopping.

Date: 2021-03-26 07:53 pm (UTC)Day 351 CW: Cannibalism mention, descriptions of human remains from cannibalism
Date: 2021-04-13 07:23 pm (UTC)Description: This time, "Kino" and "Hermes" can be heard normally.
Sky is assisting the snowed in men in digging their truck out. Once the way is clear, they ask Sky to remove the luggage from the vehicle, referring to them as "Kino." They all head to the back and one man goes inside while another asks, "Kino, will that motorrad be fine?" When they turn around, the man on the truck walks out holding a gun pointed at Sky, and though Sky immediately reaches for the holster of their own revolver, they stop and calmly face down the gun pointed at them, realizing they can't beat the man out in speed. What proceeds is a very calm and often blunt conversation in which the men reveal that they are slave traders intending to capture and sell Sky as a high-quality product with jewels and pretty clothes. Hermes, the motorrad, will of course be sold to a new owner as well. The men claim that they're truly grateful to Sky for saving them, but in the end they must do what it takes to survive.
They order Sky to remove their revolver, and one is smart enough to tell them to remove the pistol from their back, leaving Sky impressed he noticed. They then demand that Kino remove their knife, to which Kino explains they have them all over, and then has to remove them each one by one - from the pouches around their belt, the inside of their cuffs, the side of their pants, their boots, even a sheathe on their leg. It's enough to make the men question if they're a knife merchant. Eventually they pull out one last knife with a particularly fat handle... that turns out to be a hidden gun, because they use it to shoot the man in front of them, knife the man next to him deeply in the back, and then throw that corpse at the third man to pin him to the ground, retrieving their revolver to shoot him.
Hermes asks if they're alright, and Sky responds that they're unharmed, but that it was scary. They spend a while standing there, grinding their teeth before taking up the revolver again and checking out the truck.
Inside are human remains that are completely stripped of any flesh or edible pieces. Enough of the head remains to tell that it was a teen with long blonde hair, around the same age as Sky. After taking in the scene, they shut the door again, but leave the remains of the slave with the words “It’s not right. But, they didn’t want to die.”
They make the preparations to leave, taking out the ring that was offered to them by the men as a reward for saving them and leaving it behind "because I wasn’t able to save you in the end." They also pause to apologize to the remains of the three rabbits they hunted in the days earlier for the men: “Please don’t think badly of us. We’re only humans, after all.”
They then leave.

Notes;
Date: 2021-04-13 07:25 pm (UTC)-They kept calm on the surface but they were honestly terrified their gambit might not work.
-Travelers on the road are not to be trusted.
-Their name is Kino, the motorrad is Hermes.
Day 363
Date: 2021-05-13 01:41 am (UTC)Description: Kino and Hermes go to a shop and sell unneeded items, using the money to purchase supplies for their travels. The shopkeeper gives them a discount for being a traveler. Kino, noticing the rifle behind the shopkeeper's chair, asks if it's used in the case of robberies. The shopkeeper notes that there's never been a robbery. The rifle is merely there for killing people, although he doesn't know when the time to do so might arise.
Kino then explores the country, finishing in a day because it's small. They stop at a restaurant where Kino asks about sweets on the menu, and ends up ordering the special - a giant stack of crepes, which they regard as a challenge and eat. Once they finish a group of elderly sit nearby and chatter with them about various things, before recommending Kino immigrate to the country as they seem like the kind of person suited to it. When Hermes asks what kind of person that is, they respond “A person who can kill people.”
Kino declines the offer, but does agree to meet for tea to talk about the country the next morning. The group hopes that Kino will be able to relax in this country, as traveling can be so dangerous in comparison.
Note: the original Japanese does not particularly gender Kino, and by default most people tend to assume Kino is male upon sight, so assume cases of "Miss" etc. are just some polite referral to Kino (one official translation uses Mx.) unless otherwise noted.

Date: 2021-05-13 01:42 am (UTC)-They're kind of disappointed about that tbh.
Day 363 - cw: discussion of suicide bombing
Date: 2021-05-13 02:01 am (UTC)Description: A slightly younger Kino and Hermes are heading back after Kino's first day of school in a dilapidated building. Hermes asks Kino what they learned and Kino responds with "how to make stuff!" When Hermes asks what kind of stuff, not mentioned in the excerpt: Kino describes handmade bags of various types constructed to conceal bombs, as well as the explosives that would be placed in them. Hermes says it sounds pretty fun, which Kino agrees with, though they do note that the others in class were quiet and brooding types and Kino felt left out. But that might have just been because Kino was nervous. They describe the teacher as pretty, young, and great at explaining things clearly.
The two then chat about various things: how school was more fun than Kino expected, Hermes dealing with an annoying dog he tried to shoo away with a yell at a frequency humans couldn't hear, Hermes refusing to explain motorrad lifespans to Kino, and how Kino's Teacher said that Kino's Master teaches everything she knows, but if she doesn't already know it, she'll go out and learn it and then teach it to anyone else willing to learn. Hermes asks if the lessons from this school will be useful, and Kino recalls that learning how to read didn't seem interesting, but now that they know several alphabets they can read all kinds of interesting books, so maybe this will come in handy too.
Once they reach a log cabin in the woods, they are greeted by an old woman, Master, who tells Kino to try shooting the scarecrows in the vegetable fields. Kino enthusiastically agrees and rides Hermes along the path, shooting each of the scarecrows in a fatal location while atop the moving motorrad, performing a quick turn, and shooting four a second time around using up the last of their ammunition. Master comments that Kino has done well and asks about how their day at school was as they go inside for dinner.

Notes;
Date: 2021-05-13 02:02 am (UTC)-So that's who Master is
-Master is the person who trained them in combat for sure
-Why were they so scared of Master later?
Day 363
Date: 2021-05-13 02:16 am (UTC)Description: Kino is on a rocky but well-vegetated mountain, climbing back up to Hermes who is parked on a road. Kino is walking away from a camp of about thirty dead bodies, adults and children, and two trucks loaded with traveling luggage parked nearby. Hermes asks how it went, and Kino responds that every single one is dead. Judging by the foam in the mouth and discoloration, they likely mistook the plants growing on the mountain for the variety that grows in different regions. However, the type that grows at high altitudes is poisonous, so when they tried to boil and eat them like the herbs they were used to, they all died.
Kino notes that they'd really rather not see scenes like this, and Hermes suggests they close their eyes. However, a cloud rolls in and both are engulfed in so much white, they can't see each other despite being right next to each other. They decide to stay still and muse that it's great, not seeing anything for a moment, even if they'll be able to see again soon. Hermes asks if Kino would be happier if once their vision cleared, there was nothing to be upset about, and Kino agrees that they'd be happier, but that's impossible and all they can do is leave. Kino wonders aloud about how if they'd just known that tiny bit of information... if only someone somewhere told them about it... if only Kino and Hermes had been here a day earlier...
Hermes tells them not to be so hard on themself, and they respond that it's also possible they'll die someday because of something they don't know, and that kind of thing just can't be helped.
A gust picks up again, clearing away the cloud.

Date: 2021-05-13 02:17 am (UTC)Day 374 - animal death, food preparation
Date: 2021-06-20 05:25 am (UTC)Description: Kino and Hermes are picked up at the hotel of a country by twenty adults, all thanking Kino for showing them their cooking and asking to observe while they cook. Kino seems surprised by the turnout, and agrees to being observed but makes it clear they won't tell the others how they do it.
They're taken to a large kitchen and provided the finest ingredients, including a live chicken selected by Kino prior to entry. Kino then proceeds to cook, expertly killing and plucking the chicken for cooking. One of the observers mentions to Hermes that Kino is good with handling the knives, and Hermes responds that Kino was carefully trained in the art of using knives back at Master's place. But after that... their cooking is, quite frankly, a disaster. They don't bother to measure any ingredients whatsoever and end up putting all of the chili provided in, to the point where the chicken is tomato-red. With full confidence in their work, Kino uses various seasonings with no particular rhyme or reason before finally declaring the meal complete. The crowd praises their work and then hurriedly divides up the portions to try, resulting in all of them making spectacular faces while still somehow managing to heap praises on the food, to Kino's pleasure. The people end up eating all of the chicken other than the serving Kino had, and Kino and Hermes leave the same day.
Once away from the country, Hermes insists the food was terrible and everyone looked sick, but Kino seems convinced that they did a great job. Kino claims it was a fun country, while Hermes mutters it was a weird one.
Note: the original Japanese does not particularly gender Kino, and by default most people tend to assume Kino is male upon sight, so assume cases of "Miss" etc. are just some polite referral to Kino (one official translation uses Mx.) unless otherwise noted.
Notes;
Date: 2021-06-20 05:26 am (UTC)-On one hand Kino's food is demonstrably terrible, on the other, they inwardly harbor a hope that they're actually a genius when it comes to cooking...
-They personally found nothing wrong with the food they prepared. It tasted perfectly fine!
Day 374
Date: 2021-06-20 05:48 am (UTC)Description: Kino, parked by a stream, discusses with Hermes how they have no idea what to do. So instead, they decide to set up a hammock and take a nap. Mid-nap, the ground starts to shake, and Kino makes a controlled fall from the hammock with a persuader at the ready. However, it turns out the cause of the tremors is a country - specifically, a walled country on huge caterpillar treads. Kino and Hermes break camp and hurry after it, catching the attention of the country and getting it to stop. After a quick chat over loudspeaker, Kino is allowed into the country thanks to a ramp, and they are treated to a tour by the immigration inspector.
The country itself travels because everyone in the country loves migrating and seeing the world from their homes. It utilizes a huge nuclear power reactor to power the entire country, but the extra energy must be used as well, which is why the country is constantly on the move. The technology seems fairly modern outside of the country-moving treads, including computers and remote monitors and cars traveling various streets and intersections with traffic lights and so on. All of the residential areas are in the lower levels, though the tour guide takes them to the top floor which is a communal park for everyone's recreation as it is the only floor where residents can enjoy sunlight. Unfortunately, it all comes at a price, as behind the country everything is flattened by the treads - something the tour guide feels some guilt over as it is the price paid for their travels.
Kino and Hermes are then given a small but clean room with everything fixed and secure against tremors. When Kino returns from a shower, Hermes comments that all the water including what they drink is recycled, but Kino retorts that they couldn't care less since it's still better than muddy water filtered through rags. They then go to sleep for the night, cutting off a final comment from Hermes and telling him they'll chat more tomorrow.
Note: the original Japanese does not particularly gender Kino, and by default most people tend to assume Kino is male upon sight, so assume cases of "Miss" etc. are just some polite referral to Kino (one official translation uses Mx.) unless otherwise noted.
Notes;
Date: 2021-06-20 05:50 am (UTC)-They're definitely hoping that the moving country will take them past whatever was preventing them before, they just can't remember what that was.
Day 374
Date: 2021-06-20 06:03 am (UTC)Description: A slightly younger Kino is once again at the worn out school, now with a completed bomb hidden in a completed bag. Their teacher gives a rousing speech about how wonderfully everyone has done, and how they have all graduated and should show their families and the whole world what they made. She then goes on to make an impassioned speech about her belief that conviction is the most important thing in life, for they must be able to believe in themselves and their actions even if they are asked if it is the right thing to do.
Kino cheerfully heads out of the country and back to a log cabin out in the forest where they are once again greeted by an old woman who looks at the bomb inside the bag and remarks on the construction used for such things these days, clearly impressed.

Notes;
Date: 2021-06-20 06:04 am (UTC)-This was definitely a terrorist organization indoctrinating kids, but Kino was legitimately just there to learn how to make bombs.
Day 374
Date: 2021-06-20 06:12 am (UTC)Description: A younger Kino takes the bomb bag out with Master, carefully dismantling the bomb and checking out all of the pieces. The woman compliments Kino's craftsmanship and is happy that they were able to diagram the entire construction. They then put it together again as if it had never been taken apart.
They then head out with Hermes into the forest, away from the house. Kino hangs the bag with the bomb on a branch with the detonation cord leading to Master and Hermes taking cover behind a thick tree trunk. Kino joins them and checks to make sure everyone is ready before pulling the cord, leading the high-powered military bomb to detonate and send nails for shrapnel burying themselves into the trees. Master, Kino, and Hermes all celebrate the successful detonation as the two humans remove earplugs - Kino built it perfectly!
