Day 398
Date: 2021-08-27 12:42 am (UTC)Description: Kino and Hermes are taking a short cut through a forest when it starts to show signs of rain. Kino is on the lookout for a large tree to stop and camp under, worrying about finding dry wood, when Hermes remarks there's an empty building up ahead. They drive a little further and sure enough there is a building large enough to be a small school. After checking with Hermes who says the only things inside are lizards and bugs, Kino goes in and returns to report that it looked safe and sturdy enough for a single night.
Kino drives Hermes into the building's halls before coming to what might have been a classroom, saying aloud that they would be borrowing that room. Thin, blue people made of light or fog with no faces save for two eyes watch Kino from inside. Kino and Hermes then proceed to talk and evidently ignore the crowd of ten or so blue people around them - Hermes states Kino need to clean first, and Kino narrates their actions aloud (need to brush away the leaves, time to get a branch to use as a broom, wait a minute please). The blue people stay largely together but drift away to avoid touching Kino or Hermes.
This continues for the rest of the night - the blue people watching Kino as Kino narrates what they're doing, from preparing their camp for the night to remarking multiple times how lucky they are to have shelter, to pausing and bringing out canned meat for dinner as a treat instead of their usual clay-like rations. They end the night talking cheerfully with Hermes about their plans for the next day. Eventually they turn in for the night, saying aloud "see you tomorrow then," before going to sleep.
The next morning, they go through their normal routine of gun maintenance and quick draw practice before cleaning up all traces of their camp and stating "I haven't left anything." They drive Hermes out of the building, the corridor lined up with blue people all the way to the entrance, only stopping once out to turn back to the building once more. The blue people, densely packed around the entrance, continue to watch Kino and Hermes. With one final, soft "thank you," Kino and Hermes drive away, the blue people all waving their hands at the retreating pair.
Note: the original Japanese does not particularly gender Kino, and by default most people tend to assume Kino is male upon sight, so assume cases of "Miss" etc. are just some polite referral to Kino (one official translation uses Mx.) unless otherwise noted.
Notes;
Date: 2021-08-27 12:43 am (UTC)-They also definitely narrated their actions the whole time so the blue people knew what was going on.
-Honestly they're just grateful they were allowed to take shelter there.
