Day 401 cw: light mention of lobotomy
Date: 2021-09-11 11:48 pm (UTC)Description: A young child wakes up around noon, a paper on the wall of their bedroom displaying the words "TWO MORE DAYS" in big red letters. They wash up and hear noises outside, so they go to investigate and find the traveler in the midst of a scrap heap, getting the pieces cleaned up and fixed. They chat for a bit - the traveler, Kino, is "healing" not fixing this motorrad because it looks like his partner from before. He asks the child if they have any name ideas, and they ask what the name of his old one was, and he responds "Hermes." The child says that's a good one, so Kino agrees that the name of this new motorrad will be Hermes. According to him, the motorrad will surely talk once it's healed enough to wake up - and as a result, it will require a pact to help each other once it's awake. Kino will offer to give it balance as its rider, allowing the motorrad to move quickly without falling over.
They chat more - the child asks what Kino's job is, because he's an adult and all adults need jobs. He responds that he's more of an adult than the child at least, but the closest thing he has to a job is traveling. But the child declares that isn't a real job, because real jobs are hard. They aren't fun, but people have to do it to live, so if it's fun it isn't a job. But that's why the child is getting an operation the day after tomorrow, to become an adult - the operation everyone undergoes when they turn twelve, where their head is opened up and the child is taken out, leaving only an adult who will be a splendid, hard working adult. The child is on their "final week" in which no one speaks to them so they can spend their final week as a child in solitude, free from all manners of meddling.
When Kino says it's a cruel story, the child is surprised. Talking to Kino, they realize it's possible to "grow up" without the operation, even though Kino would still by all appearances qualify as an "adult." They spend some more time talking, and they both sing, Kino's voice frankly terrible but the child's quite lovely. However, the child can't become a singer, because their parents are innkeepers. Kino finds this regretful, but returns to his work on fixing Hermes, and the child finishes up the day and returns to bed, thoughtful.
