Day 401
Date: 2021-09-12 12:47 am (UTC)Description: Kino wakes and begins their day in looking for someone who can maintenance their persuaders. They get instructions from a passerby and ask Sakura to guide them. Sakura has to call quite loudly for the persuader smith before he comes out, saying he's closed today and the next day, but Sakura chides him saying Kino won't be there by then. Suddenly very interested, he decides to service Canon and tells them to return in the evening.
In the meantime, Sakura and Kino check out the nearby park where they're invited to watch a play about the history of the country, people even giving up their seats and the actors starting all over to make sure Kino can watch it while they can. The people were originally persecuted and came across this forest where they were able to sustain themselves off the bountiful food. They then decided to make a country here, where no one would hate them. Kino is invited to stay for the afterparty, and are set to work grilling the food - to which Hermes comments it looks like they're having a lot of fun.
After that, they retrieve their persuader from the persuader smith for free, who insists on giving Kino "Woodsman," a persuader he wore on his own hip when he traveled. He also asks about someone who made her apprentices call her Master, but Kino replies that they don't know of any such person, which he accepts as she was a person who caused so much trouble, she was often cursed... but also thanked. He makes Kino shoot at an indoor shooting range using the new persuader so he can make various adjustments, even altering the holster so it can be attached to the back. By the time they're done it's almost evening, and Sakura insists on taking Kino to one last place.
They're brought to the topmost part of the wall, where they get the best view of the sunset. Sakura talks about her dreams of becoming a good hotel owner and tour guide and bringing future tourists to this place to enjoy the view. Kino posits that Sakura is already a wonderful tour guide, because they've had so much fun in the past two days thanks to Sakura.
They return to the hotel for a pleasant dinner with Sakura's parents and Sakura's parents suggest that Sakura would be a better guide if she traveled to other countries like Kino and learned more about the world. Sakura asks Kino very pointed questions, like if experiencing hard things while traveling made them ever feel like quitting (no, they would still continue) or if they traveled because they believed it was something they had to do (no, they travel because it's what they want to do) before finally deciding that she'll stay and become the best tour guide in the country. Her parents exchange a look before finally relenting, the family laughing and teasing each other lovingly, Kino watching them as though in a world of their own.
Note: the original Japanese does not particularly gender Kino, and by default most people tend to assume Kino is male upon sight, so assume cases of "Miss" etc. are just some polite referral to Kino (one official translation uses Mx.) unless otherwise noted.
