Day 407
Date: 2021-10-02 02:54 am (UTC)Description: Kino is drinking tea at an open café when a man around thirty years old comes up to them and, once Kino has introduced themself and Hermes as travelers, questions if they plan to continue traveling. He seems to take issue with Kino traveling instead of going to school or, at the very least, getting a job. In his eyes Kino is wasting away their life by playing and neglecting the duties that come with being a human. "You are nothing but a rootless wanderer."
Kino listens in silence as he continues to talk, drinking their tea throughout the tirade. He goes on to talk about how they have a duty to have a regular job and serve the people of their country, become a member of society, get married and have a family, to make their spouse happy, have children and bring them up well, and send them out as new members of society. These are all obligations of humans and right now Kino would not be able to fulfil them, which Kino confirms with a smile.
When he finishes talking, he asks if Kino understands, and Kino does - but says that they'll keep traveling, which seems to anger him because they clearly didn't at all, ignoring the advice of the elderly. He points out that they shouldn't ride a motorrad either, as they're dangerous, unlike cars, which are respectable. However, he notices the time and has to run off, still yelling angrily as he leaves. Kino calmly chats with Hermes, wondering if the man held a grudge against travelers and motorrads before looking over a map and all the exciting places they're planning to travel to next.
Note: the original Japanese does not particularly gender Kino, and by default most people tend to assume Kino is male upon sight, so assume cases of "Miss" etc. are just some polite referral to Kino (one official translation uses Mx.) unless otherwise noted.
