Day 412
Date: 2021-10-22 01:48 am (UTC)Description: A younger Kino moves to face a newly arrived merchant, who amicably steps down from his carriage and pulls out a rubber knife; it's apparent this is a friendly, already agreed upon spar, and Kino seems downright excited greeting him for the match, taking out their own rubber knife.
Instead of charging forward with the knife, Kino takes three steps back, stomping on a branch that turns out to flip a previously hidden revolver into the air. Catching it before the man can charge at them, Kino fires it at his belly, the rubber bullet bouncing off the man's abs. Kino fires two more times, directly at his heart, and the rubber bullets bounce off as well. When Kino announces they've won, an old woman steps out from a nearby cabin to watch the two from the terrace. The man begins laughing uproariously, and the old woman seems pleased with Kino's work, thanking the man for his help with training. The man praises Kino's skill again before leaving and the old woman discusses Kino's victory with them.
Hermes protests that Kino won but only by cheating, and the woman agrees it's very unfair; however, by fighting unfairly, Kino ensured they didn't die. In fact, although they're incredibly skilled with a knife and most likely strong enough to protect themself out in the world, in this case they never could have won with only the knife due to the differences in both size and experience. Therefore, the lesson was to teach Kino to fight unfairly, and Kino figured that out on their own.
She then has Kino unload their remaining bullets by hitting a target in the dead center and asks if they'd like to continue lessons or take a break, and Kino excitedly asks to continue. The old woman then takes out her own revolver and says that the next lesson will involve surprise gunfights anywhere, at any time, using rubber bullets from morning until night. They both may fire any time they see an opening, and Kino needs to think that they are being targeted at all times, starting immediately.
As she points her own revolver at Kino, Kino looks at their right hand, holding... a freshly emptied revolver. The old woman shoots them with a rubber bullet, leaving a small bruise on their forehead along with advice: "“Just like this, you can never loosen your guard at all times. Never forget to prepare your persuader. A persuader without a bullet is nothing but deadweight.”
After she leaves, Kino just bursts into laughter and says: "Unfair."
Note: the original Japanese does not particularly gender Kino, and by default most people tend to assume Kino is male upon sight, so assume cases of "Miss" etc. are just some polite referral to Kino (one official translation uses Mx.) unless otherwise noted.
