Day 435
Date: 2022-01-08 11:22 pm (UTC)Description: Kino is in a fairly agricultural looking country with a single straight road through the town. However, in the middle of the road is a row of bronze statues. Kino sets up a ramp to continue the road over one of the statues and begins lining the road with rope cautioning people to stay out of the street. As they're approached by the flustered chief, they greet him pleasantly before explaining that he should stand back as it's extremely dangerous to be in the road. At one end of the road, a flying machine can be seen, clearly someone's first attempt at making such a thing - but structurally sound.
With Kino's assistance, the woman with the primitive plane - Nimya - takes off from the ramp and flies up, up, up into the air, much to the awe of everyone - Kino included. As Nimya enjoys her flight, Kino tells the townspeople that in order for her to return to the ground, she'll need a long flat surface, meaning at least three or four statues will need to be moved. The townspeople rally and move seven statues, foundation and all, taking apart the ramp to cover the holes left behind by the statues so Nimya can touch down again.
Once Nimya lands and comes to a stop, the townspeople all begin apologizing profusely and calling her a mage, asking her to become governor. For a moment it looks like they think Kino is a mage as well due to their help and they hurriedly fetch Hermes to leave before things become complicated. Before they leave, Nimya takes a moment to shake their hand and thank them for intervening. Even if it was complete coincidence they happened to visit, if they hadn't, the machine would have been destroyed and the rest of her life would have been one of disappointment. Kino congratulates her and says they had fun helping before they take off.
In the swamp outside of the country, Kino relishes in how amazing it was that a person really flew. In doing so they inadvertently reveal they didn't actually think the machine would work, but the country was so boring, they helped on a whim. Hermes, baffled by this admission, ponders the range of potential human beings have as Kino cluelessly continues their journey.
Note: the original Japanese does not particularly gender Kino, and by default most people tend to assume Kino is male upon sight, so assume cases of "Miss" etc. are just some polite referral to Kino (one official translation uses Mx.) unless otherwise noted.
